“He dispatched his slaves to the tenants to obtain his share of the grapes.” —Matthew 21:34
Some of us are collectors. We are the servants the Lord has sent out to collect His share of the produce (Mt 21:34). We might be ushers taking up the collection at Mass, or making phone calls and home visits on behalf of a parish ministry. We might recruit volunteers or work in an evangelization ministry. We might be “fishers of men” (Mt 4:19), collecting souls for the Lord.
Being a collector for the Lord is risky work. We are in danger of being attacked and disrespected (see Mt 21:35-36). Yet our Master was treated the same way (Mt 21:37-39). Will we pay no heed to the shame or the risk (Heb 12:2) when it’s time to collect for the Master? (see Mt 21:37-39) Or will we collect for ourselves, that is, pasture ourselves? (Ez 34:2)
Tax collectors such as St. Matthew understood this kind of collection. Matthew turned to Jesus and worked to collect many souls for the Kingdom of God (Mt 9:9-10). Like Matthew, the Lord has called us to collect for the harvest, so He may have His share of it. Let us be faithful workers, always making sure the Lord’s harvest does not go uncollected.
Prayer: Father, You deserve the very best harvest. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon me so I might present You with a full share of the fruit You seek.
Promise: “Your thoughts should be wholly directed to all that is true, all that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure, admirable, decent, virtuous, or worthy of praise.” —Phil 4:8
Praise: “To the One seated on the throne, and to the Lamb, be praise and honor, glory and might, forever and ever!” (Rv 5:13)
